Charging guide

Charger Sizing

Choose charger output (amps) and type (trickle, smart, fast) for your battery size and use case.

Choosing charger output and type

Charger output (amps) affects how quickly the battery recovers. For most car batteries (40Ah–80Ah), a 4A–5A smart charger is a good balance: fast enough for overnight recovery, gentle enough to be safe. Larger van or commercial batteries may suit 8A–10A. Trickle chargers (1A–2A) are for maintenance, not fast recovery.

Type matters as much as amps: for Start/Stop (AGM/EFB), you need a charger with the right mode. For storage, a float/maintain capability is important. For lithium, only a dedicated lithium charger will do. See our charger types and battery-type pages to match your situation.
