Charging in Storage
Keeping a battery healthy during long-term storage: float chargers, solar, and maintenance schedules.
Keeping a battery healthy in storage
During storage, either disconnect the battery and keep it charged with a maintainer, or leave it connected to the vehicle with a float/maintain charger (or solar maintainer if no mains). Do not leave the battery flat or on a charger that has no float stage—both can cause sulphation or overcharging.
Check the battery every few weeks if it is disconnected and not on a maintainer; top up charge if the voltage drops. In the UK, storage often coincides with winter; a quality maintainer is the most reliable way to keep the battery ready for spring.
