Charging guide
Safe Charging
Safety rules for charging: ventilation, correct polarity, AGM/EFB modes, and avoiding overcharge.
Safety when charging
Charging produces hydrogen gas, so work in a well-ventilated area and keep sparks and flames away. Ensure correct polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative); reversed connections can cause damage or fire. If the battery is in the vehicle, follow the handbook—some makers recommend disconnecting the battery or the negative lead before connecting a charger.
Use a charger that matches your battery type and voltage. Do not overcharge; use a smart charger with float or a timer. Wear eye protection when handling batteries and avoid leaning over the battery while it is charging. In the UK, batteries are often in engine bays; if possible, avoid charging in rain or with the bonnet fully closed to allow ventilation.
