Understanding 12V battery voltage: resting, charging, float, and what readings mean for health.
What battery voltage means
For a 12V battery at rest (engine off, no charge for a few hours): 12.6V–12.8V is healthy; 12.4V is partly charged; below 12.0V is flat or failing. When charging, voltage rises into the 14V range (absorption); when full and on float, it sits around 13.2V–13.8V. A multimeter is the simplest way to check; measure at the terminals with everything off.
Voltage alone does not tell you capacity or cranking ability—a battery can show 12.6V but fail under load if it is sulphated or has a bad cell. For a full picture, use a load test or a dedicated battery tester. Our voltage checker guide helps you interpret readings.
