Charging in Winter

Cold weather reduces battery capacity. How to maintain and charge batteries in winter.

Winter charging in the UK

Cold reduces battery capacity and increases the current needed to start the engine. In winter, batteries that are already weak or undercharged are most likely to fail. Keeping the battery fully charged—by regular driving or by using a smart charger or maintainer when parked—reduces the risk of a no-start and helps the battery last longer.

If the vehicle is used for short trips only, connect a charger weekly or leave a maintainer connected when it is parked at home. Use a charger with AGM/EFB mode if the vehicle has Start/Stop. Allow the charger to finish; do not disconnect halfway through the cycle.
