Chargers for Lead-Acid Batteries
Standard flooded lead-acid batteries are compatible with most conventional and smart chargers.
Charging standard lead-acid batteries
Conventional flooded (wet) lead-acid car batteries are the most forgiving type: they work with almost any 12V car charger, including basic trickle and smart chargers. A smart charger will still give the best result—proper bulk, absorption, and float—and is safer to leave connected than an old-style unregulated trickle charger, which can overcharge if left on too long.
If the battery has removable caps, check electrolyte levels before charging and top up with distilled water if needed. In the UK, standard lead-acid is still common on older vehicles and some classics; for long storage, use a maintainer or smart charger with a float phase.
