Trickle Chargers
Low-amp chargers for long-term maintenance and storage. Best for keeping a battery topped up over weeks or months.
What is a trickle charger?
A trickle charger delivers a low, constant current—typically between 1A and 2A—to a 12V car or van battery. Unlike a smart charger, it does not automatically switch to a float or maintenance phase; it keeps feeding a small charge indefinitely. That makes it well suited to long-term storage or seasonal vehicles (e.g. classic cars, motorhomes, or a second car used rarely) where the goal is to offset natural self-discharge without boiling the electrolyte or overcharging.
In the UK, where vehicles may sit for weeks in cold, damp conditions, a trickle charger can help prevent sulphation—the buildup of lead sulphate on the plates that reduces capacity and eventually kills the battery. Use one only on batteries that are already in good condition and that you can leave connected for extended periods. Never use a high-amp trickle charger on small or AGM batteries without checking the manufacturer’s limits.
- Typical output: 1A–2A for 12V car batteries.
- Best for: storage, classic cars, infrequently used vehicles.
- Risk: overcharging if left on indefinitely with no float stage; choose a model with automatic float or use a timer.
- UK tip: pair with a battery conditioner or smart maintainer if the battery is AGM/EFB.
When to use a trickle charger
Use a trickle charger when the vehicle will be parked for weeks or months and you have access to mains power. Ideal cases include winter lay-ups, classic car storage, and caravans or boats in the off-season. For daily drivers or batteries that are already flat, a smart charger with a proper bulk–absorption–float cycle is a better choice; trickle chargers are not designed to recover deeply discharged batteries quickly.
