Charging use case
Storage Charging
Long-term storage demands float/maintain or solar charging to avoid deep discharge and damage.
Long-term storage: what to do
During long-term storage—winter lay-up, extended travel, or a vehicle that is rarely used—the battery will self-discharge. Left unchecked, it can fall below 12V and sulphate, or in very cold weather freeze (especially if already low). The standard advice is to either disconnect the battery and store it charged, or keep it connected to a float/maintain charger or a solar maintainer if mains power is not available.
If you disconnect the battery, charge it fully first with a smart charger, then store it in a cool, dry place and top it up every few weeks (or use a maintenance charger). For vehicles that must stay connected (e.g. alarm, BMS), a quality maintainer that holds float voltage is the safest option. Avoid leaving a conventional, non-smart charger on indefinitely—it can overcharge and damage the battery.
