Float and maintenance charging explained
Maintenance chargers (sometimes called float chargers or battery maintainers) are designed to hold a 12V battery at a safe float voltage—typically 13.2V–13.8V—once it is already charged. They supply only enough current to compensate for self-discharge, so they will not quickly recharge a flat battery. Their job is to keep a charged battery in good condition during storage or long periods of inactivity.
In the UK, they are commonly used for seasonal vehicles, motorbikes, caravans, and boats. If you already have a smart charger, many smart chargers include a float/maintain phase, so a separate maintenance-only unit is only necessary if you specifically want a small, low-cost device dedicated to long-term storage.
- Output: usually 0.5A–1.5A; enough to maintain, not to recharge quickly.
- Use once the battery is fully charged; not for recovering a flat battery.
- Ideal for storage, winter lay-up, and infrequently used vehicles.
