Chargers
Charger types
Compare charger types for car and van batteries: trickle, smart, maintenance, solar, jump starters, fast chargers, workshop, motorcycle, leisure, and lithium. Match the type to your battery and use case.
Not every charger does the same job. Trickle chargers deliver a low, constant current for long-term maintenance and are best for vehicles that sit for weeks or months. Smart chargers run a full bulk–absorption–float cycle and often include AGM/EFB modes, making them the default choice for most UK drivers—recovering a flat battery, maintaining a car that does short trips, or keeping a stored vehicle ready. Maintenance (float) chargers hold a battery at a safe voltage once it is already charged; they are not for quickly recharging a flat battery.
Solar maintainers suit vehicles parked without mains (driveway, marina, campsite); in the UK, winter daylight limits output, so they are best used as maintainers rather than fast chargers. Jump starters get you moving in an emergency but do not recharge the battery—after a jump, drive for 20–30 minutes or use a smart charger to fully recharge. Fast chargers deliver higher amps for quicker recovery but must be used with care on AGM/EFB; workshop chargers are built for daily use in garages and fleets. Motorcycle and leisure battery chargers are designed for smaller or deep-cycle batteries; lithium batteries require a dedicated lithium charger—never a lead-acid or AGM-only unit.
Trickle Chargers
Low-amp chargers for long-term maintenance and storage. Best for keeping a battery topped up over weeks or months.
Smart Chargers
Automatic multi-stage chargers with AGM/EFB modes. Ideal for regular use and recovery of flat batteries.
Maintenance Chargers
Float/maintain chargers that keep batteries at optimal voltage without overcharging. Suited to seasonal or stored vehicles.
Solar Chargers
Solar-powered maintainers for vehicles parked without mains. Good for caravans, boats, and long-term storage.
Jump Starter Chargers
Portable jump starters and booster packs for emergency starts. Not a replacement for proper charging.
Fast Chargers
Higher-amp chargers for quicker recovery. Use with care on AGM/EFB—follow manufacturer limits.
Workshop Chargers
Professional-grade chargers for workshops and fleet use. Multiple modes and high capacity.
Motorcycle Chargers
Low-amp chargers designed for motorcycle and small vehicle batteries. Often include lithium support.
Leisure Battery Chargers
Chargers for deep-cycle and leisure batteries in caravans, motorhomes, and boats.
Lithium Chargers
Dedicated chargers for LiFePO4 and other lithium automotive batteries. Never use lead-acid profiles on lithium.
