How smart chargers work
Smart chargers (often sold as 'intelligent' or 'multi-stage' chargers) use a microprocessor to run a full charge cycle: bulk (high current until voltage rises), absorption (holding voltage while current tapers), and float (maintenance voltage, usually around 13.2V–13.6V for 12V lead-acid). Many also offer a dedicated AGM and sometimes EFB mode, which is essential for Start/Stop and modern vehicles in the UK.
Because they detect battery state and switch phases automatically, you can leave a smart charger connected for long periods without overcharging. They are the default recommendation for most UK drivers: recovering a flat battery, maintaining a vehicle that does short trips, or keeping a stored car or van ready. Always ensure the model you buy supports your battery type (AGM/EFB if fitted).
