Charging use case
Winter Charging
Keep your battery healthy in cold weather. Cold reduces capacity and increases starting demand—a maintained battery is essential.
Why winter is hard on batteries
Cold weather reduces a battery’s ability to deliver current: chemical reactions slow down, so capacity and cranking power drop just when the engine needs more effort to turn over. In the UK, winter mornings often combine low temperatures with short trips—school run, commute—so the alternator never gets enough time to fully recharge the battery. Over weeks, the battery sits in a partially charged state, which encourages sulphation and shortens life.
Keeping the battery fully charged in winter reduces the risk of a no-start and helps it last longer. The most effective approach is to connect a smart charger or maintainer when the vehicle is parked at home—overnight or for a few hours several times a week. That is especially important for Start/Stop vehicles (AGM/EFB), which place higher demands on the battery.
- Cold reduces capacity and increases cranking demand; a weak battery fails first.
- Short trips in winter mean the battery may never reach full charge.
- Use a smart charger or maintainer regularly when the vehicle is parked to keep it topped up.
