Charging use case
Infrequent Driving
Batteries discharge when the car sits. A maintainer or smart charger prevents sulphation and flat batteries.
Batteries and infrequent use
When a car or van is used only occasionally—e.g. once a week or less—the battery may never receive a full charge from the alternator, and between drives it slowly self-discharges. After a few weeks, the voltage can drop low enough that the engine won’t start, or the battery becomes sulphated and loses capacity permanently.
A battery maintainer or smart charger left connected when the vehicle is parked (at home or in a garage) keeps the voltage in the correct range and prevents sulphation. Choose a model that has a float/maintain phase so it can be left on indefinitely. For cars that are only used at weekends or on holiday, this is one of the most effective ways to avoid flat batteries and extend battery life.
