Charging problem
Overcharging
Overcharging damages batteries. Use a smart or float charger with the correct voltage and avoid leaving conventional chargers on indefinitely.
Risks of overcharging
Overcharging occurs when the charger keeps pushing current into the battery after it is full, or uses too high a voltage. In lead-acid batteries, that can boil the electrolyte, warp plates, and shorten life. In AGM and gel, overcharging can dry out or damage the internal structure. Symptoms include excessive gassing, a smell of sulphur, or a battery that gets hot when charging.
To avoid overcharging: use a smart charger with an automatic float/maintain phase, or a dedicated maintainer. Do not leave an old-style unregulated trickle charger on indefinitely. Set the correct mode (standard/AGM/EFB/gel) for your battery. In the UK, most modern smart chargers switch to float automatically; if yours does not, use a timer or disconnect once the battery is full.
