Chargers for Gel Batteries

Gel batteries need chargers that limit voltage to avoid damaging the gel electrolyte.

Charging gel batteries

Gel batteries use a gelified electrolyte and are sensitive to overcharging: excessive voltage can create permanent damage. They require a charger that limits the maximum voltage (often 14.1V–14.3V for 12V gel) and does not use an equalisation mode. Many smart chargers have a 'gel' or 'gel/AGM' setting; use it. Do not use a high-rate charger or a lead-acid-only charger without a gel option.

Gel batteries are less common in UK cars than AGM/EFB but are still used in some leisure, marine, and mobility applications. If in doubt, check the battery label and use only a charger that lists gel compatibility.
