Charging problem

Wrong Voltage

12V batteries need 12V chargers; 6V systems need 6V. Wrong voltage can cause dangerous overcharging or undercharging.

12V vs 6V and why it matters

Most cars and vans use 12V batteries; some older vehicles and motorbikes use 6V. A 12V charger on a 6V battery will overcharge it and can cause damage or failure. A 6V charger on a 12V battery will barely charge it. Always match charger voltage to battery voltage. Many chargers have a 12V/6V switch or separate modes.

When checking voltage with a multimeter, a rested 12V battery should be about 12.6V when full; 6V about 6.3V. If you are unsure of your system voltage, check the battery label or vehicle handbook before connecting any charger.
