Charging use case

Caravans

Leisure and deep-cycle batteries in caravans need appropriate chargers and often solar support.

Caravan battery charging

Caravans usually have one or more leisure (deep-cycle) batteries for lights, pumps, and appliances when off hook-up. These are charged from the tow car’s alternator while driving, from mains via an on-board charger when on site, and increasingly from solar. The on-board charger should be set to a leisure/deep-cycle profile; if you use a standalone charger at home, it must be suitable for deep-cycle batteries—not just a car starter charger.

During the off-season in the UK, leisure batteries are often left for months. Either disconnect and store the battery with a maintenance charger, or leave it in the van connected to a float charger or solar maintainer. Letting it sit flat will damage it and shorten its life.
