Charging use case

Motorhomes

Dual-battery and leisure systems in motorhomes require compatible chargers and charging regimes.

Motorhome and camper van charging

Motorhomes typically have a starter battery (for the engine) and one or more leisure batteries (for habitation). Charging can come from the alternator, mains hook-up via an on-board charger, and often solar. The starter battery is usually lead-acid or AGM; the leisure bank may be lead-acid, AGM, or lithium. Each may need a different charging profile, so on-board systems and any standalone charger must be compatible.

When the vehicle is stored in the UK—especially over winter—both starter and leisure batteries need to be maintained. A combined maintainer with separate outputs, or two maintainers, can keep both banks in good condition. If the leisure bank is lithium, use only a lithium-compatible charger or solar controller.
